Getting Started

 Hi everyone! 

I'm Roanne and I've just graduated from Northern Ballet School. I live in a rainy part of England called Wigan but dancing is the sunshine in my life! Ever since I was two I wanted to be on a stage (I thank Angelina Ballerina for that) and dance has made me who I am today.

It has given me confidence, discipline, awareness of myself, passion, and a deep love and respect for artists and creators.

I'm definitely looking forward to learning more about the industry and different aspects within it. I love teaching and choreography, as well as the physical and mental/psychological study surrounding dance and performance. 

At first I was apprehensive about a course with less 'structure' or specific content than I am used to, but now I am excited about all the possibilities that it holds and the different roads I could go down!

I'm looking forward to being able to communicate and share ideas with everyone to find new knowledge and inspiration through a supportive community.

Thank you everyone who has already shared some tips having completed Module 1, your experience is very much appreciated!

    Hi Roanne, I loved reading your post and can completely relate to how you are feeling. I am also a dancer starting Module One and my emotions are currently mixed between nervous and excited, but I have felt so supported by the BAPP community. Your passion for dance really shows in your post which is beautiful! As you have cleverly said, our profession thus far has given us many skills that will allow us to share and explore throughout this experience. I am excited to see where this road will take us! x

      Thank you Alice! It is nice to connect to other dancers within the course and share this learning experience. You are exactly right, this already feels like such a supportive community and we have hardly begun - in fact I have been blown away by the love and encouragement! I hope we may continue this way as we grow and discover new things :) x

    Hi Roanne, lovely to see a fellow northerner in our BAPP community (originally from Salford but I live in Astley now so come under the lovely borough of Wigan!)

    I love how you've outlined all the attributes dance has given you, I think this is something that often gets disregarded especially by those from outside our industry. Dance really is so much more that sequins and splits!

    Here's to the next step on a very different but exciting journey

      Hi Georgina, I certainly didn't expect to connect with someone so near me on this course but it is lovely to know I have!

      "So much more than sequins and splits" - I LOVE that! So very true. It's a side of dance that non-dancers often overlook and don't appreciate.

      I hope it will serve us well as we move forward on our course though! x

The Art of Being an Artist

Can you even say you're on this course without at some point going down a rabbit hole? I think not. Allow me to introduce you to the warren I've fallen into.  Following my blog debating whether dance is a sport, how the two are similar/different, and if its place in the Olympics is valid, something kept cropping up: Dancers are artists Dancers are artists. Dance is art. Dance goes beyond just the physical skill to artistry. Dance unites athleticism and artistry. Dance is not a sport because it is an art form. To be a successful dancer you must be an artist. Sport needs skill but dance needs skill and artistry. To be a better dancer is to be a better artist. Module 3 Reflection

  I cannot fully believe that I am at the end of Module 3 and of the BAPP course. It feels like only a few weeks ago that I was sitting at the start of module 1 wondering what on earth I was even going to be studying! Safe to say it has not been without its challenges, of both the good and less good varieties. But these are all things that help us to grow. I think this has been a more enjoyable module than module 2 because it has felt more focused and centred around the inquiry topic that I wanted to investigate. It has also been interesting to attempt academic inquiry for the first time and interview professionals for research. Of all the things that I have learnt across the module, a few that stand out are the fundamental aspect of story is emotion, not necessarily narrative plot it is emotion that grounds us in experience and ultimately gives that experience meaning communication through dance is never one way and always relies on the interpretation of the audience language...
