Anti-Social Media?

Monday 28th September Skype - Module One Discussion To say this was a loaded hour of conversation would be an understatement. Right down to our very last minute together this discussion was full of depth, ethics, current major issues and lots of questioning. As I look back over my notes, I realise one blog post could not possibly cover it all, so for now I will focus on just one of the earlier topics that struck a chord with me.  Social Media.  Now, I have never been its biggest fan. I didn't even have Facebook until I was 18 and I still don't have Instagram (not many 21 year-olds can say that).  I do realise that as a dancer Instagram is a platform I ought to be utilising for both promotion and progress - especially in a global pandemic when we are in and out of lockdowns like yo-yos - and it is something I am trying to overcome. More on that later perhaps. The discussion emanated from the idea of social media creating an online version of you from your data (both ...

Questions about Questions

I am writing this post following the 23rd September 9pm Skype discussion group with all modules. I will admit I was a little nervous before this call as this was the first open discussion group I have attended, but it was so lovely to have everyone introduce themselves and see where people are up to in different modules. Everyone was so friendly and supportive and even though I have only been on the course a very short while, it already feels like I am in a community of learners and thinkers. The two main areas of discussion in this group were questions and reflection. Taking the topic of questions, interesting points I gathered were; find questions that inspire/unleash other questions - avoid 'closed questions' with solid answers create a mind map of what you want to know from a question questioning is a journey, not the link between A and B - this takes time! be objective with questions - are your questions one-sided? question around your subject area - broaden your knowledg...

Sitting Pretty and Quirky Intuition

It is not that uncommon for me to be spotted as a dancer or asked if that is what I do. Yet, every time it takes me by surprise when a complete (or an almost) stranger comments on my posture.  Any dancer knows posture is drilled into you whether you like it or not, and for many it becomes second nature. I'm at the point where  A) it genuinely gives be back ache if I sit with poor posture for a while (my hairdresser actually apologises to me when she needs me to sit back in the chair because she knows it's uncomfortable), and B) I completely forget that other people don't sit like me and they think it's weird Fortunately, most people comment on it as a good thing, and it actually sparks a lot of conversations with people.  At the gym today, I was on a quad resistance machine and when I came off it to clean it (a recent COVID-orientated addition to the routine) a lovely lady complemented me on my beautiful posture when I was sitting on the machine and asked if I danced. I...

Getting Started

Hi everyone!  I'm Roanne and I've just graduated from Northern Ballet School. I live in a rainy part of England called Wigan but dancing is the sunshine in my life! Ever since I was two I wanted to be on a stage (I thank Angelina Ballerina for that) and dance has made me who I am today. It has given me confidence, discipline, awareness of myself, passion, and a deep love and respect for artists and creators. I'm definitely looking forward to learning more about the industry and different aspects within it. I love teaching and choreography, as well as the physical and mental/psychological study surrounding dance and performance.  At first I was apprehensive about a course with less 'structure' or specific content than I am used to, but now I am excited about all the possibilities that it holds and the different roads I could go down! I'm looking forward to being able to communicate and share ideas with everyone to find new knowledge and inspiration through a sup...
